Puzzle games built for a short commute

August 28, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Commute games have a specific job: entertain you for exactly as long as you have, then let go instantly. Puzzles are perfect for this because most of them break naturally into short attempts.

Lucky Coin is a great example — each level is a quick flick, and if your stop comes mid-attempt you just lock the phone and continue later. Lantern Vale works differently, better for longer rides where you want to sink into a mystery.

The trick to finding good commute puzzles is looking at session length. If a game demands a long uninterrupted run, it'll frustrate you every time the doors open. You want something you can drop and resume without penalty.

I also avoid puzzle games that punish you with waits or lives. A commute is short enough already. The best ones just let you keep trying until it clicks, which is exactly the mood you want packed into a train car.
